眠れる巨人は深海生物を終わらせる可能性がある
これまで見過ごされてきましたが、大陸が今の位置にあることは、海の生命を維持するのに十分な酸素を供給するのに適しています。そういう要素を考慮すると大陸移動が最終的に逆の効果をもたらし、ほとんどの深海生物を殺してしまう可能性があります。
カリフォルニア大学リバーサイドの地質学者であり、論文の共著者であるアンディ・リッジウェル氏は、「大陸移動は非常にゆっくりしているように見えますが、小さなその出来事でさえ、海洋生物の大量死を引き起こす可能性がある」と海洋酸素に影響を与える力に関する新しい研究で明らかにしています。

- A previously overlooked factor — the position of continents — helps fill Earth’s oceans with life-supporting oxygen. Continental movement could also ultimately have the opposite effect, killing most deep ocean creatures.
- “Continental drift seems so slow, like nothing drastic could come from it, but when the ocean is primed, even a seemingly tiny event could trigger the widespread death of marine life,” said Andy Ridgwell, UC Riverside geologist and co-author of a new study on forces affecting oceanic oxygen.
